Repair or replace?
Some water heater problems are worth repairing: a failed element, thermostat, igniter or thermocouple, or a sticking valve. Others mean it's time for a new tank:
- The tank itself is leaking from the bottom or the seams
- It's 10 to 15 years old and needs a significant repair
- Rusty water from the hot tap only
- Rumbling or popping from heavy sediment the tank can't recover from
We'll tell you which one you're looking at, and won't push a replacement when a part will do.
Choosing a new water heater
| Type | Best for | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Gas tank | Most Ottawa homes with a gas line | Lower running cost than electric. Venting has to suit your house. |
| Electric tank | Homes and condos without gas | No venting needed, so it fits almost anywhere |
| Tankless (on-demand) | Families that run out of hot water, or need basement space back | Endless hot water and wall-mounted. Higher upfront cost, and gas line and venting changes may be needed. |
We size it on how many people live in the house and how you use hot water, not on the biggest unit we can sell.

Renting your tank now?
Many Ottawa homeowners pay a monthly rental on a tank they could have owned years ago. We'll explain how ending a rental usually works, install a tank you own, and walk you through the numbers so you can decide.
