Basement Flood Protection in Ottawa

Sewer backups, groundwater and power cuts flood basements in different ways. We check which risks your home has, install only what protects it, and help you claim the City's rebates.

Basement floor opened with a new access box for a backwater valve

Three ways basements flood, and what stops each one

What happens What you see What stops it
City sewer backs up in heavy rain or snowmelt Sewage comes up through the floor drain A backwater valve on your building drain
Groundwater rises around the foundation Water through walls, cracks or the floor Weeping tile to a sump pit and sump pump
Power goes out in a storm The sump stops and the pit overflows A battery backup sump pump and an alarm

Many Ottawa homes need one of these, and some need two. Our basement check tells you which, so you only pay for what protects your home.

Apply within one year of the permit. Source: ottawa.ca.

The permit has to come before the work. Installing first and applying after is the most common way homeowners lose the rebate. We pull the permit, install to City standards, book the inspection, and give you the paperwork to apply.

Questions Ottawa homeowners ask us

What's the difference between a backwater valve and a sump pump?
A backwater valve stops sewage backing up from the City sewer through your drains. A sump pump removes groundwater collected by weeping tile around your foundation. They protect against different kinds of flooding.
Which City of Ottawa rebates can I get?
Through the Residential Protective Plumbing Program: up to $1,000 for an indoor sanitary backwater valve, up to $1,500 for a sump pump with battery backup in an existing pit, up to $3,000 with a new pit, and 100% of the permit fee, for eligible homes.
Is my home eligible for the rebate?
Homes built before January 1, 2012 for sanitary (backwater) work and before January 1, 2004 for storm (sump) work. Replacing an existing device isn't covered. Apply within one year of the permit.
Does home insurance require a backwater valve?
Some insurers ask for one before covering sewer backup, or offer a discount. Check your policy. We give you the paperwork that shows the valve was permitted and inspected.
